Gita Mandir, also known as Birla Temple, is a beautiful temple on the Mathura-Vrindavan Road. It is a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site and among the most visited temples in Mathura. Lord Krishna is the presiding deity here.

The temple has got a magnificent architecture, with exquisite carvings and paintings further enhancing its beauty. But what makes Gita Mandir Temple special are the pillars inscribed with the chapters of Bhagavad Gita, the holy book of Hindu religion. These pillars have all the 700 verses, divided into 18 chapters, carved with precision.

The temple, the pillars and the other structures in the complex are all enclosed within a beautiful garden. And the entire area offers a serene and calm ambience to the pilgrims.

History of Gita Mandir Temple Mathura

Gita Mandir was built by Sheth Jugal Kishore Birla in 1946, in the memory of his parents. Jugal Kishore Birla belonged to the reputed Birla family. And he was a well-known philanthropist and supporter of Hindu philosophy.

Architecture of Gita Mandir Mathura

Gita Mandir Mathura is built in the traditional Hindu style of temple architecture. Red sandstone has been widely used to build the temple and other structures in the complex. A white marble statue of Lord Krishna adorns the main sanctum sanctorum. And the walls are covered with colourful paintings depicting various events from Lord Krishna’s life.

Things to do at Mathura Gita Mandir

Lord Krishna, who is an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped in Gita Temple Mathura. The temple complex houses his chariot too. And you'll also come across a figure of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

Other deities worshipped here are Lakshmi-Narayan and Ram-Sita. A small shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman is also within the temple premises.

Another notable structure in this Birla Mandir Complex is the towering Gita Stambh, also called the Victory Tower. It signifies the victory of truth over evil, as witnessed in Mahabharata. The tower has the sacred verses of Bhagavad Gita inscribed in fine letterings.

You can also spend time in the lovely gardens surrounding the temple.

Gita Mandir in Mathura comes alive during the festive celebrations of Janmashtami and Holi. The entire temple is decorated with flowers and illuminated with colourful lights during those days. And devotees come from all over the country to witness the special pujas and grand celebrations and ceremonies.

Gita Mandir Temple Timings and Entry Fee

Gita Mandir remains open all 7 days of the week. The usual visit timings are from 5 AM to 12 PM and from 2 PM to 8 PM. But these timings might change during festivals or other special events carried out on the premises.

It would be best to plan your trip during Holi or Janmashtami festival. Holi is celebrated around March/April, while Janmashtami falls around August/September. The entry is free for all.

No photography is allowed inside the temple building, but you can click as much as you want on the premises.

How to reach Gita Mandir in Mathura

Mathura Gita Mandir is on the outskirts of Mathura, en route Vrindavan. It is about 12 km away from Mathura railway station as well as the bus stop. The nearest airport is at Agra (80 km away), but Delhi International Airport (170 km away) offers better connectivity.

By bus – You can take government or private buses to Vrindavan and visit Gita Mandir. Get off on the highway and take an auto or taxi to the temple.

By auto – Regular auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are also available to the temple. They take only around half an hour to the temple from Mathura city centre.

By taxi/cab – Taxis and full-day cabs are also available for hire from top car rental companies in Mathura. You can take one to the temple and spend as much time as you want.
